Bridge in Ecuador

breezebus.com – In March 2025, Ecuador faced two significant bridge collapses attributed to distinct causes: structural overload and severe flooding.

Bridge Collapse Due to Overload

A 200-meter (656-foot) suspension bridge in Ecuador collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals. The incident occurred when the bridge, heavily trafficked, gave way, causing several vehicles to plunge into the Magro River, approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Guayaquil. Among the vehicles were four trucks, a car, and two motorcycles. Authorities have reported five injuries and are continuing search operations for potential missing persons.

Bridge Collapse Due to Flooding

In a separate event, heavy rains in southern Ecuador caused the Malacatos and Zamora rivers to overflow, leading to the collapse of another bridge and damaging multiple buildings. The city of Loja, home to 215,000 residents, was among the affected areas. Authorities have initiated cleanup operations and are monitoring weather conditions closely, as further heavy rainfall is anticipated.

These incidents underscore the critical importance of infrastructure maintenance and the need for preparedness against natural disasters. Ecuadorian authorities are conducting thorough investigations to determine the causes of the collapses and to implement measures aimed at preventing future tragedies. Read More
